with the terms of the contracte, His Majesty's Consul-General was forcing upon them an impossible course of action. In regard to the friendly settlement suggested by this Government, Mr. Jamieson at first professed inability to understand it. Later on, because of the argument raised, he put it on one side and never referred to it again, thus cutting the ground from under their feet and depriving this Government of any basis to work upon. When the Commissioner of Industry discussed with the Company the matter of purchasing the confiscated stone, was not this a proof that Government desired to help the Company? Was it not also a proof that they had no mind to prohibit the export of limestone and so injure the Company's interests? The subsequent failure of the Company to effect a purchase was due entirely to their own cupidity. They wanted the

stone too cheap.

In the Memorandum under acknowledgment, Mr. Jamieson has

ignored the weak points in the case and closed the argument with a final statement which this and previous explanations sufficiently

show to be incorrect. The several points traversed above conclusive.
